But why exactly does massage work, and how does it achieve these goals? Fortunately, there have been studies demonstrating how massage manages to function, and the results are certainly enlightening.

A researcher in Ontario studied how massage affected men after partaking in lengthy and strenuous exercise. He tested their muscles with a biopsy immediately after the exercise, then massaged a single leg on each of them, and tested again.

Firstly, he discovered how massage reduces inflammation. A protein named NG-kb is often responsible for muscle inflammation, and they found that the protein’s activity was substantially dampened in the leg which received massage.

Secondly, there appeared to be evidence of how massage helps muscles to recover and grow. A second protein, known as PGC-1alpha is known to increase mitochondria counts, small portions of the cell which generate help generate new muscle and improve the muscle’s capability to withstand strain. This protein was recorded in substantially increased levels.
